European Medicines Agency's 2009 budget approved

The European Parliament has approved the discharge of the European Medicines Agency's budget from 2009.

The Parliament approved the discharge after agreeing that the Agency had taken action to remedy the shortcomings initially identified by the Budgetary Control Committee.

The Agency has also strengthened the rules on how it handles potential conflicts of interest of its staff and experts.

The discharge was approved on the condition that the Agency assess the impartiality and independence of its staff members thoroughly when they are appointed as project team leaders to manage the evaluation process for a medicine, improve its procurement procedures and keep the Parliament better informed of the results of actions requested.

Today's vote closes the Agency's accounts and is the last formal step in the discharge procedure.

The European Parliament is the European Union's budget discharge authority. Once annual accounts are audited and finalised, Parliament decides, on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, whether or not to grant a discharge to the Commission and other EU bodies for their spending in each financial year.
