EMA welcomes Italy’s Minister of Health Beatrice Lorenzin
On 1 March 2016, the Italian Minister of Health Mrs Beatrice Lorenzin visited the European Medicines Agency (EMA) at its London headquarters.
Welcoming Minister Lorenzin, EMA Executive Director Guido Rasi said: “I am very pleased to host Minister Lorenzin and her delegation at EMA today. Her visit underlines the importance of the work of EMA for national health systems. It is also an opportunity for us to recognise the contribution of the Member States to our activities. Only due to the collaboration with national scientific experts, EMA can ensure quality, safety and efficacy of all medicines available in Europe and safeguard patients’ health and wellbeing.”
In her address to the Agency’s senior management, Minister Lorenzin focused on the need to find a European solution to the challenges all national healthcare systems are facing, such as ageing populations, new technologies and economic pressure. She said: “We need to work together even more closely to ensure the sustainability of our systems. I strongly believe in our regulatory system in Europe and have a lot of confidence in the model of EMA. We still need to further improve this system and joint health technology assessments are already a great step to better benefit the European citizen.”
The programme for the visit included a question and answer session with the Agency’s senior management, with a particular focus on initiatives that stimulate innovation in medicines development.
