End of year message from EMA’s Executive Director

Thoughts on 2017 and challenges for 2018

As we approach the end of 2017 I would like to take a moment to thank all our partners and stakeholders for their support during this year. It was not always easy to stay focused on our core tasks with the uncertainty of relocation hanging over us, nonetheless we did everything we could to deliver on EMA’s mission to promote and protect public health as European citizens - rightly - expect from us. We also did our best to break new ground, for example with our first-ever public hearing on a medicine and the new and improved Eudravigilance system that went live in November.

Looking ahead, 2018 will be even more challenging. Preparing for the Agency’s move to Amsterdam and the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union will occupy the time of many staff members that we would rather spend on activities that make a difference to public health. We will have to refocus on our core tasks and adjourn some initiatives. However, I am looking forward to our cooperation with the Netherlands to achieve a smooth transition to our new host country and trust that also in 2018 EMA staff will not miss a beat in our efforts to improve public and animal health in the EU. It will not be easy but I am confident that with the continued support of our partners and stakeholders we will be able to achieve our ambitious goals.

I and all staff at EMA wish you a merry Christmas, a pleasant holiday season and a healthy, productive and happy New Year.
