24/11/2010 - The Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC) today elected Werner Knöss as its new chair and re-elected Ioanna Chinou as its vice-chair, for a three-year term.
Dr Knöss has been the German representative on the Committee since 2006. He is currently head of the Department for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Traditional Medicinal Products at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) in Bonn.
Prof Chinou has been the Greek representative on the Committee since 2005 and its vice-chair for the past three years. She is currently Professor of Pharmacognosy in the School of Pharmacy of the University of Athens.
The HMPC is one of the Agency's six scientific committees, whose work assists in the harmonisation of procedures and provisions concerning herbal medicinal products in European Union Member States and the integration of herbal medicinal products in the European regulatory framework. Its main role is to establish Community herbal monographs and Community list entries.
Both Dr Knöss and Prof Chinou have also been involved in the HMPC's Working Party on Community Monographs and Community List (MLWP) for a number of years, most recently as its vice-chair and chair, respectively. The MLWP gives recommendations to the HMPC on the establishment of Community herbal monographs and Community list entries.
As a result of today's election, Dr Knöss will be stepping down as vice-chair of the MLWP. Elections for a new vice-chair will take place in 2011.
