Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use elects new chair and vice-chair

The European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) today elected Dr Eric Abadie (France) as new chair and Dr Tomas Salmonson (Sweden) as new vice-chair, with three-year mandates from 18 June 2007.
Dr Abadie is a physician specialised in internal medicine, diabetology and cardiology. He was a member of the Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products (CPMP), the predecessor of the CHMP, from 1997 to 2004. In 2001, he was elected vice-chair of the Committee and confirmed in this role by the CHMP when it replaced the CPMP in 2004. In addition, Eric Abadie is chair of the Pharmacogenetics Working Party and was a member of the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP).
Dr Salmonson is a pharmacist specialised in pharmacokinetics. He was a member of the CPMP from 1999 to 2004 and has continued his membership in the CHMP since 2004.

1. The CHMP is responsible for preparing the Agency's scientific opinions on all questions concerning medicinal products for human use, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 726/2004. It is composed of a chair, elected by serving CHMP members; one member (and an alternate) nominated by each of the 27 EU Member States; one member (and an alternate) nominated by each of the EEA-EFTA states Iceland and Norway; up to five co-opted members, chosen among experts nominated by Member States or the EMEA and recruited, when necessary, to gain additional expertise in a particular scientific area.
