The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is a networking organisation, working in close cooperation with European Union (EU) institutions and Member States.

EMA operates at the heart of the European medicines regulatory network, a unique collaborative model between over fifty national regulatory authorities for both human and veterinary medicines in the European Economic Area, EMA and the European Commission.

EMA's scientific opinions form the basis of the authorisation of medicines in the EU through the centralsied procedure and feed into discussion at EU and national level on the regulation of medicines and issues of major public health interest.

The Agency takes part in EU projects to foster links with the EU enlargement countries and helps them to prepare for future participation in EMA's activities.
