The European Medicines Agency is supporting World Mental Health Day which takes place on 10 October.

World Mental Health Day 2012 focuses on depression and aims to encourage governments and civil society around the world to address depression as a widespread illness that affects individuals, their families and their peers, and to recognise that it is a treatable condition.

The Agency plays a role in the authorisation of medicines to treat mental-health illnesses and has recommended the authorisation of a number of medicines in the European Union (EU).

The Agency also provides guidance for pharmaceutical companies developing medicines for the treatment and diagnosis of these illnesses. Today, the Agency published a revised Guideline on clinical investigation of medicinal products, including depot preparations, in the treatment of schizophrenia - Revision 1 following a public consultation in 2011.

The Agency also works closely with organisations representing patients with mental-health illnesses through the Global Alliance for Mental Illness Advocacy Networks (GAMIAN-Europe).
