The European Medicines Agency has released a concept paper on the development of medicines to prevent HIV infection for a Concept paper on the guidance on the non-clinical and clinical development of medicinal products for HIV prevention including oral and topical PrEP.
The paper addresses the need for a reflection paper on medicines for the pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) of HIV through sexual transmission.
It follows the recent positive results of two studies using anti-HIV medicines to reduce the likelihood of catching HIV, one in women with a vaginal gel containing tenofovir and another in men with Truvada (tenofovir and emtricitabine) tablets.
The concept paper is open for comments until 30 April 2011.
