The data that EMA collects and highlights in its ESUAvet annual reports provide information to EU and EEA countries on indicators of antimicrobial consumption in animals.
These indicators are essential to identify possible risk factors that could lead to antimicrobial resistance developing and spreading in animals.
Stakeholders may use these data as a reference for antimicrobial policies and guidance on the responsible use of antimicrobials. Stakeholders include scientists, veterinarians and other animal healthcare professionals, risk assessors and policy-makers in EU and EEA countries.

How data reporting works
EU and EEA countries report their data on the volume of sales and use of antimicrobial medicies in animals via EMA's Antimicrobial Sales and Use Platform.
This happens on an annual basis, as of January 2024. It is in line with the Veterinary Medicinal Products Regulation.
Reporting use data by animal species happens gradually, following an established reporting timeline.
Select the expandable panel below to access a table detailing the reporting timeline for different animal species:

Annual surveillance reports
EMA analyses the data that EU and EEA countries submit and publish annual surveillance reports on sales and use of antimicrobials for veterinary medicine (ESUAvet reports).
The first report was published on 31 March 2025. It includes data from 2023.
For data collected from 2025 onwards, EMA expects to publish the annual report before 31 December each year.
For data on sales of antimicrobial veterinary medicines prior to 2023, see:
